The Most Dangerous Chocolate Cake. Just For one.
by Shumaila
So I have been strumming my fingers on the keyboard for a while now.
I am in a dilemma about the recipe I am posting today.
Should I share this recipe
or
spare you from the depression
the knowledge of this recipe would cause.
In case you have resolved to get back in shape this new year,
I warn you to NOT read any further.
Nothing can be done about me.
I have been in on this knowledge,
but
there is still saving grace for you.
Stop reading.
Now.
Seriously.
I mean it.
And I am only saying it for your own good.
Ok.
If you still want to continue, it’s at your own risk.
The five minute chocolate cake has been doing the rounds for a long time now.
I only became aware of it recently.
And believe me, I could not be more happy with God for
keeping me in the dark about this little cake.
I tell you its a dangerous cake.
Its going to make you cry as to how easy it is to make it again and again.
No.
Chocolate cake should not be THIS easy.
No.
Its unfair.
And on top of it being easy to make,
its in your hands in flat 5 minutes-
the mixing of ingredients, cooking time all included.
With only one utensil to wash
(well, two if you count the spoon you going to use to eat it.)
Just grossly unfair.
Out go the pre-marriage jeans I want to fit into.
this cake will soon become one of your best friends.
It will be by your side in minutes when you are down.
Giving you comfort.
And you all know how difficult it is to ignore that friend.
You will eventually cave in to like it.
Like I have.
It is my new best friend.
you could have it as is.
Or,
with some whipped cream.
Since you indulging, you might as well do it right.
Right?
you could throw in
some strawberries.
For good measure.
About the taste-
well,
for something that dirties only a mug
and
takes 5 minutes to make from start to finish,
it is pretty darn good.
You don’t have a very spongy cake like texture
but
its nice and chocolatey
and
that works for me
and
I think
its safe to say
it would too for most of you.
The good (or bad?) part of the cake,
as V put it,
is that its not too sweet.
So you can have bite after bite.
Yes, V, you can afford to say that when you have only 1% body fat!
If you want to remove it from the mug and eat
(why would you want to do that?!that means another utensil to wash!)
but in case you do,
it would be better if you mix all the ingredients in a different bowl
and
grease the mug you plan to bake it in.
The cooking time will depend on your microwave
and
the only way for you to find out is to make repeat batches.
Yes I told you, you will hate me after reading this recipe.
It takes anywhere between 1 1/2 to 3 minutes.
It took mine 2min 30 sec.
So here you have it, the Nutella Mug Cake recipe.
I hope you enjoy (and curse this recipe) as much as I do.
5 MINUTE NUTELLA MUG CAKE RECIPE
Adapted from here
Ingredients
- 4 tbsp flour
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp espresso powder
- 1 egg
- 3 tbsp cocoa
- 3 tbsp nutella
- 3 tbsp milk
- 3 tbsp oil
- Pinch salt
Directions
- In a mug ( I use a 300 ml coffee mug), break the egg and whisk a little with a fork.
- Add milk, oil and mix together.
- Mix in the nutella well.
- Add sugar, cocoa, salt and espresso powder. Mix well.
- Fold in the flour with fork. Mix well but be careful as to not overmix else you will get a rubbery, tough texture.
- Microwave for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes on high. You will have to figure out how long you want to microwave. For me the cake is done after 2 min 45 sec.
- Let cool a bit and dig in.
*Update* Troubleshooting tip: If your cake comes out dry and rubbery, its been in the microwave for too long or you mixed it too much. Fold all the ingredients only till they come together. And play with the timings to get the right texture.
If you want to be indulgent, add whipped cream. This recipe makes one big mug of cake, which is best enjoyed shared with another person, but on the low days you can have one completely to yourself.
Keep watching this space for a post where you will be surprised by how good this dangerous cake can be when you have sudden guests over.
oooh yes i loved the title too.. ONLY FOR ONE.. yes me not sharing mine with anyone ..
lovely recipe wil ltry it one of these days for sure 🙂
Those photos are just calling my name! They are amazingly beautiful and inviting. i love the simplicity of the recipe and how delicious it is. I mean I haven’t tasted it yet but faith tells me it’s utterly sinful and anything sinful usually is très bien!
Have a fantastic day!
AMAZING! The warning was necessary – I barely skimmed over the recipe in case I actually took something in and tried to make it… I know where you are though in case of future emergencies 🙂
noooo! I should have stopped reading when you told me to!!!
Love your post! Thanks for sharing – I don’t think I’ll be regretting reading it!
all i needed to see was nutella. done. but i have a question–can i leave out the espresso powder? or can i substitute regular coffee (not instant)? thanks!
Sure you can leave out the espresso powder. The original recipe doesnt call for it. So it should be fine. About substituting with regular coffee, I think my friend tried it with regular coffee and she was happy with the results. But am not very sure about it!
Oh my love and adoration of Nutella knows no bounds – this is on The List!!
Hello, I want to try this recipe NOW! But I am a student living in a dorm and unfortunately don’t have a microwave:( What I have is a normal oven. Is it still doable? And if yes(oh please God!) how many minutes would it need? Thank you!
Baking in an oven might defeat the five minute purpose, but you could try it by preheating the oven to 350 and use a ramekin instead of a mug (don’t think mugs are oven safe). Just bake till tester comes out clean. You might need to add a pinch of baking powder to the batter. I did not use it all three times I tried it in the microwave, but maybe since you using the oven it might require a pinch of baking powder as well. Hope it works and please do let me know if it does or does not!:) Happy Baking!
Oh wow… dangerous indeed!! Mug cakes are so simple, and so good! And with nutella, it looks even better! Gorgeous photos 🙂
of course I will take the risk! it is definetly worth it
Thanks for sharing!
You welcome!:)

My cake came out moist but it smelled like a cow pie & tasted bland…? Didn’t live up to the hype 😦
Oh! I am sorry it did not work for you! I have to admit I love the taste of this cake- have tried other mug cake versions but this one was the only one I liked. Its totally fair if you did not like it. To each his own, right?
não é facil agradar uma mulher , mas não é impossível.
DANG, I was excited until I found out it uses f l o u r. I’m Gluten Free. Oh well, ignorance is bliss.
As many mug cakes I’ve tried, the first 3/4 was delicious. Then it was a pile of semi-cooked goo at the bottom. Maybe it’s my microwave..
Maybe you needed to cook it a bit longer? Just a few seconds more probably.
The semi-cooked goo at the bottom is the best bit! Flip the mug upside down into a bowl and you’ll have the cake covered in a thick, gooey chocolatey sauce.. Cover it in thick cream and it’s perfection 🙂
Thanks for the warning but I didn’t heed it so now I’m making this for the second night in a row!!!!
I left out the espresso powder and cocoa, opting for cinnamon. Divine! I recommend to anyone who’s missing those ingredients, like I was, to use cinnamon!
It came out lovely – not too sweet, nor too bitter – and quite a bit too. I was able to scoop out nice little portions for the kid. Saving some up for tonight! But really – whattay invention…
Oh, yuuuuuuuummmm! Bookmarked for when I travel and have only a microwave in my hotel room! 😉
i soo have to go and buy a microwave so i can make this now! looks fantastic
[…] a jar. The Novice House Wife is just plain incredible. I owe my foodie bliss to her. She posted a recipe entitled “The Most Dangerous Chocolate Cake Just For One”. I should have known from the title that it was going to be great. A recipe for one, with just a […]
That certainly seems like every weight-watcher’s nightmare…
😀
I have a question. How does the egg cook? Its only in the microwave for about 3 minutes.
It cooks completely. I don’t know if you have ever used those microwave egg poachers, but if you have you would know that the eggs cooks in under a minute in the microwave. So don’t worry, you wont be having a raw egg. 🙂
i tried it but for some reason the bottom always gor burned , tried to go for less than a min still the same issue 😦 do you have any idea why this happen ? does it have to do with how much of the cup is filled with the mixture?
Did you try lowering the power of your microwave? If the cup is not filled halfway, it could affect the turnout as well, I am guessing. Not sure though what is wrong- maybe try lowering the power of the microwave and cook a little longer.
Tried this today for the second time…The first time it came out too rubbery, so took care to not over-mix it! It turned out delicious! Great recipe.
I am glad you liked it. It is a tricky recipe, but once you figure it out, there’s no looking back (the same goes for your weight as well!)
Hahaha! Your recipes are dooming my weight! 🙂
Oh wow! I’m obsessed with Nutella and had to try this immediately. I was a little worried I would overmix or overcook and end up with a rubbery cake…but it was PERFECTION! Went for simple folding in of the flour then 3 min in micro. Great afternoon treat.
I made this tonight minus the coffee for my kids. Plenty for 2 of them but I am making one later for me and I AM NOT SHARING WITH MY HUSBAND!
I forgot to tell you that I made it with my GF flour mix and it was fine!
Yay! Glad you liked it! And so glad to know that this recipe can be used with gluten free flour!
Just wanted to let people know that I just made is and you can definitely use regular coffee if you want. Just omit the espresso powder and instead use just 2 tablespoons of milk, and one tablespoon of coffee. Worked great for me! Thanks for posting this recipe!
