June Daring Bakers’: Battenberg Cake

Being Indian I hate wastage. Of any kind. One of the reasons why I gained weight when I came to US (besides, the cliched that I got married) was that I was so used to finish everything on my plate, whenever we went out to eat, I ended up finishing the ridiculously huge portions of food served in restaurants here. Since we stay 4 hours away from all restaurants, doggy pack or to-go was not an option,  and since I had the habit of not wasting, I ate everything. That’s why this month’s Daring Bakers’ challenged proved to be double the challenge it was.

Mandy of What The Fruitcake?! came to our rescue last minute to present us with the Battenberg Cake challenge! She highlighted Mary Berry’s techniques and recipes to allow us to create this unique little cake with ease.

I have missed the last two challenges. Although I did a part of the April challenge, I could not get it posted because I was busy with my in-laws visit. Hopefully I should be able to post the recipe soon. ( I seriously have huge backlog!)

Now, I have been eyeing this cake- the Battenberg cake for a while now, ever since I was introduced to the Great British Bake Off cookbook. I don’t have it yet, but amazon’s site has a preview of the book and in that they show pictures of the cake. Since then it’s been on my mind. So when I saw this month’s Daring Bakers challenge, I knew come hay or sunshine, I would make it.

And make I did. Not one but two.

Pudding à la Catastrophe

I am sure if you have been around the food blogging word, the Zebra cake is something you would have come across and ooh’ed and aah’ed over. (And at the same time thought, why could I have not thought of such a thing!)

A unique take on the marble effect, I got introduced to this cake via this site. And I just had to make it.

And I did.

And it turned out really well. I served it when I had coffee for my friends at my place, and everyone was impressed by how the cake looked and tasted. V too loved the cake, but by the time he got to eat it in the evening, only a piece of it was left. So, I made it again (because it really is that simple to make). Once again it came out wonderful. But I did not blog about the cake, because I was not too happy with the pictures. I knew I would make it again and that’s when I would share it with you all.

What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger….stand a little taller…

Yesterday was one of those days when I wish I could be a kid again. Life was full of hope and dreams and filled with all kinds of opportunities.

It was simpler.

It was uncomplicated.

The only real problems being homework and exams. And the occasional peeing in your bed.

I am a strong believer of whatever happens, happens for good and that has kept me sane through the past few years, but sometimes the wait gets to you and you end up writing a depressing post like this.

Now, I have written my share of optimistic posts (don’t believe me? check this out and this) and not that I don’t believe in all that I say in those posts, I do. But for today lets just give the silver lining a rest, can we?

Mascarpone Meringue Layer Cake

I haven’t been feeling too motivated to blog. I really don’t know why. Just in that rut, I guess- the bloggers’ block. This blog was supposed to be about food as well as my life with snippets from my day to day life. You know, so that one day, when I or my kids or someone would read and say hmm so this was the day The Novice Housewife did this.

And, although things are happening in my life, there has been nothing worth writing about. And, even though I have plenty of recipes to share, I haven’t been blogging because I just don’t know what to write.

But today I can’t let my rut come in the way of sharing this recipe with you. Especially, more so because Valentine’s days is in two days.

And though I am not a Velentine’s Day celebrator, in case you are, you will have to make this.

And share it with that special someone.

Or not. And eat it all by yourself.

Apple Pie Tartlets/ Mini Apple Pies

This post has been lying in my drafts for two weeks now. With all the pictures placed, but no words.

I don’t know but whenever I begin to write this post I experience what you call a writer’s block (although in no way I consider myself a writer- a blogger block would be a better term. Blogger block- bet you cant say that ten times quickly! I digress.)

So instead of posting the recipe, each time I decided to leave it for later. Instead the nutella mug post got published. Surprisingly there was no block for that. I tried again to write this post and instead the follow-up to the most dangerous cake got published.

Not that this recipe isn’t great. Oh it’s plenty great but I just don’t know how to introduce it.

I generally have some story of mine to add to my posts or some memory that recipe brings up. But I have not grown up on apple pies. I am Indian. Nor has anything exciting happened to me over the past few weeks. In other words, nothing exciting worth telling. Hence the blogger block.

The Follow Up to The Most Dangerous Chocolate Cake

Yes, I know I missed another GMT this week. And I also know most of you would have not noticed, but I will still give an explanation for the absence!

I have such a backlog of recipes, that I thought I would attend to those first. Also, I was waiting for WordPress support to answer a query of mine before posting anything. But since they do not seem to be replying anytime soon (Hello, WordPress support, are you listening?), I thought I will post anyway.

And I am not lying when I say I have a backlog of recipes- there’s today’s post, Chipotle’s Burrito Bowl Copycat recipe, Tomatillo Salsa, Bbq Chicken Tacos, Apple Pie Tartlets and a Cottage Cheese Cake recipe in the pipeline. Not to mention a zafrani chicken recipe one of V’s colleagues requested me to try. Yes, some one has been busy in the kitchen.

The Most Dangerous Chocolate Cake. Just For one.

So I have been strumming my fingers on the keyboard for a while now.

I am in a dilemma about the recipe I am posting today.

Should I share this recipe

or

spare you from the depression

the knowledge of this recipe would cause.

In case you have resolved to get back in shape this new year,

I warn you to NOT read any further.

Nothing can be done about me.

I have been in on this knowledge,

but

there is still saving grace for you.

Stop reading.

Now.

January Recipe Swap: Crepes with Lemon Curd Whipped Cream

I actually forgot about this month’s swap. I do not know why, but I was under the impression that Christianna had said we will take a break for the month of January.

I guess it was the lazy-holiday bone in me that probably convinced my brain that we were on a break.

So when Christianna sent us a reminder last week, I was in panic.

I had nothing. As always.

And this time’s recipe swap asked us to do something I am really not comfortable with.

Use raw egg yolks!

Yech!

First post of Twenty Twelve: Pumpkin Trifle with Caramelized Pecans

If it didn’t Bring you Joy,
Just Leave it Behind.

Let’s Ring in the New Year
With Good Things in Mind.

Let Every Bad Memory Go
That Brought Heartache and Pain.

And let’s Turn a New Leaf
With the Smell of New Rain.

Let’s Forget Past Mistakes
Making Amends for This Year.

Sending You These Greetings
To Bring you Hope and Cheer!

-Author unknown

A very, very happy new year! Hope you had a blast welcoming 2012 and wish it brings with it beautiful moments that you will cherish for years to come.

V and I had an amazing new year eve.

There was a small get together at home with friends.

There was dancing.

Laughter.

And, drinking- a lot of that actually.

There was also food- lots of that too (which I could not savour since ‘someone’ had a little too much to drink!).

Overall it was a good, good night!

The past few days of cakes and celebrations!

There’s no such thing

        as a perfect person-

but there is such a thing

        as a person who’s perfect for you…

and you’re that person for me!

…..

So no matter what you might think

is less than perfect about yourself-

it really doesn’t matter,

        because you’re prefect for me.

I wouldn’t change one single thing…

I love you just the way you are.

                                                     – Dierdra Zollar

These are the wordings from the card that V gave me the day I arrived back from India.

Yes I am back. Finally.

After two and a half months away from home, and one and a half months away from V, I am finally back to our mining town life.

I have yet to start unpacking. I have yet to start cooking meals. I have yet to clean the house.

Bottom line, I have yet to get back to being the Novice Housewife.

I did get a start on it though, on 27th.

27th was also my birthday and I thought I’ll make myself a cake. I know its depressing that I made my own birthday cake, but there’s more to the story than that.
